Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast biopsy of microcalcifications using a prone table with lateral approach in Korean women.
Materials and Methods: From April 2009 to March 2010, 40 vacuum-assisted stereotactic biopsies in 38 patients were planned. A vertical approach was preferred over a lateral approach. The biopsy success rate utilizing only a vertical approach was compared with a vertical/lateral approach. And minimal breast thickness was measured at each approach and pathologic results were evaluated.
Results: Among 40 cases, 27 biopsies were performed and 13 cases were failed. Twelve cases of the biopsies were performed using a vertical approach and 15 cases were performed using a lateral approach. The success rate of a vertical approach was only 30% (12/40). Including the lateral approach, the success rate was increased to 67.5% (27/40). With lateral approach, minimum breast thickness was 14 mm, whereas 18mm in vertical approach. Findings in 20 (74%) of the biopsies were benign and 7 (26%) were malignant.
Conclusion: Stereotactic vacuum-assisted breast biopsy using prone table cannot be performed in every patient with microcalcifications. But with a lateral approach, thinly compressed breasts are well sampled. This is important especially for Korean women, as the breasts are thinner than Western women.
